What We Repair
Rings
Ring resizing up and down, prong retipping, prong replacement, stone replacement, head replacement, shank repair, full shank replacement, mounting assembly and installation, and soldering multiple rings together.
Most ring repairs are completed within a few days, depending on complexity.
Chains, Necklaces, and Bracelets
Chain soldering, clasp replacement, bracelet link repair, end cap replacement, and chain shortening.
Broken chains are one of the most common repairs we handle, and many chain repairs are completed same-day.
Earrings
Post repair, back replacement (friction and screw-back styles), and hinge repair on drop and hoop earrings.
Pearl Jewelry
Knotted restringing with individual knots between each pearl, restringing without knots for certain styles, and drill-and-glue pearl repair for pearls that have come loose from settings or posts.
Platinum Jewelry
Basic and advanced platinum welding, platinum ring sizing, and structural repair on platinum settings. Platinum requires specialized equipment because it melts at a much higher temperature than gold or silver.
Many jewelry shops in the Mesa area send platinum work out to third-party shops. Nelson handles all platinum repairs in-house.
Watches
Battery replacement for $5.00 ($1 goes to United Food Bank), watch reconditioning, and band adjustment. If you need a battery replaced, please feel free to stop in any time during business hours. You don’t need to make an appointment.
Finishing Services
Professional cleaning and polish, satin finish application, and rhodium plating to restore the bright white finish on white gold pieces.
Rhodium plating is recommended every 12 to 18 months for white gold rings worn daily.
If you need a repair not listed here, call (480) 459-9867 or bring your piece in. We can assess it on the spot and let you know what’s possible.
Repairs We Don’t Typically Handle (And Why)
Not every piece can be repaired, and we would rather tell you upfront than take your money for work that won’t hold up. Here are the most common situations where repair isn’t the right path:
Costume and fashion jewelry with base metal plating. Plated pieces (gold-plated, gold-filled, or silver-plated over base metal) don’t respond well to heat-based repair.
The plating peels or discolors, and the underlying metal isn’t strong enough to hold a lasting repair. We’re happy to look at your piece and tell you honestly if it falls into this category.
Tungsten and titanium rings. These metals are extremely hard, which makes them scratch-resistant but also impossible to resize or solder using standard or laser welding methods. If your tungsten or titanium ring no longer fits, replacement is typically the only option.
Heavily corroded or structurally compromised pieces. If the metal has thinned beyond a safe working threshold or corrosion has eaten through load-bearing areas, repair may not hold. We’ll show you exactly what we’re seeing and explain your options.
Full mechanical watch movement overhauls. We handle battery replacements and basic reconditioning, but complete mechanical movement rebuilds require a dedicated watchmaker with movement-specific parts and tools.
Walk in with any piece you’re unsure about. The inspection is free, and we’ll give you a straight answer.
Our Repair Process. Drop-Off to Pick-Up
Step 1: Complimentary Inspection.
Walk in with your piece during business hours. We inspect all stones, settings, and structural integrity at no charge. No appointment needed.
Step 2: Assessment and Explanation.
David or a member of the team explains exactly what the piece needs, what caused the issue, and whether the repair should happen now or can wait. You see the problem firsthand under magnification so you understand what we’re recommending and why.
Step 3: Estimate and Approval.
You receive a clear cost estimate before any work begins. No surprises, no hidden fees. For complex repairs that require detailed assessment or sourcing specific parts, we may need a day to finalize the estimate.
Step 4: In-House Repair.
All work is completed on-site in our Mesa workshop. Your piece never leaves the building. We use laser welding technology for repairs that require precision heat control, especially work near gemstones or on thin, intricate metalwork.
Step 5: Final Quality Check and Pick-Up.
Every repair is cleaned, polished, and inspected before you pick it up. We walk you through what was done and offer care recommendations so you can get the most life out of the repair.
What Affects Jewelry Repair Costs in Mesa
Every piece is different, so repair costs vary based on the specific work involved. Here are the main factors that determine what your repair will cost:
Metal type. Gold, silver, and platinum each require different techniques, tools, and materials. Platinum is the most labor-intensive because of its high melting point and density, so platinum repairs generally cost more than the same repair in gold or silver.
Repair complexity. A simple chain solder is a different job than a full shank replacement or rebuilding a vintage setting with multiple structural issues. More steps and more precision mean more time at the bench.
Stone involvement. Repairs near or involving gemstones require extra care to protect the stone from heat and mechanical stress. Heat-sensitive stones like emeralds, opals, and pearls may need to be removed before work begins and reset afterward, which adds steps to the process.
Parts and materials. Replacement prongs, heads, clasps, shanks, or stones add material cost on top of labor. We source quality replacement parts and can show you exactly what’s being used.
Piece condition. A piece that has been repaired poorly in the past or has significant wear may need additional work to get right. Previous bad solder joints, weakened metal, or incorrect sizing all factor in.
Walk in for a free estimate. We’ll show you exactly what the piece needs and what it will cost before any work begins. No obligation. Nelson Estate Jewelers, 1862 W. Baseline Road, Suite 101, Mesa. Call (480) 459-9867.
Why Choose an Independent Jeweler Over a Chain Store for Repairs
When you bring a piece to a national chain jewelry store for repair, the work is usually sent to a regional repair center.
Your ring or bracelet is packed into a shipping pouch, sent to a facility that handles hundreds of repairs from dozens of stores, and returns two to four weeks later.
You never meet the person who touches your piece.
At an independent jewelry shop with an on-site workshop, the process is different.
You hand the piece directly to the person doing the work.
They inspect it in front of you, explain the issue, and complete the repair in the same building where you dropped it off.
Turnaround is faster, communication is direct, and there’s no corporate markup on labor or parts.
Nelson Estate Jewelers does all repair work in-house at our Mesa location.
We have laser welding capability for precision repairs that require controlled heat, and we accept pieces from any store, any brand, any era.
You don’t need to go back to where you bought it.
