Types of Jewelry Appraisals We Offer

Not every appraisal serves the same purpose. The type you need depends on why you’re getting the piece evaluated.

Here’s what Nelson Estate Jewelers provides and when each type applies.

Verbal Appraisals (Complimentary)

A verbal appraisal is an in-person evaluation where we examine your piece, assess the metal, stones, craftsmanship, and condition, and give you a professional opinion on its value. This is not a written document. It’s a conversation with a jeweler who has 25+ years of experience looking at thousands of pieces.

Verbal appraisals are useful when you want to know the general value of a piece before deciding whether to sell, when you’ve inherited jewelry and have no idea what it’s worth, when you’re curious about something you found in a relative’s collection, or when you want a second opinion on a value you were given elsewhere.

We provide complimentary verbal appraisals on any piece, regardless of where it was purchased. No appointment needed. Walk in during business hours.

Insurance Appraisals (Pieces Purchased from Nelson)

An insurance appraisal is a written document that establishes the replacement value of a piece for your insurance company. It includes a detailed description of the item: metal type and weight, stone identification and grading, measurements, condition, and a stated replacement value based on current market pricing.

Nelson Estate Jewelers provides insurance appraisals on jewelry purchased from our store. If you bought a piece from us and need documentation for your insurance provider, bring it in and we’ll prepare the appraisal.

Written Insurance Appraisals for Outside Pieces (Referral)

At this time, Nelson Estate Jewelers does not provide written insurance appraisals on jewelry purchased elsewhere. This is a deliberate choice. A proper written insurance appraisal requires specific documentation standards, and we want to make sure you get the right level of service for that need.

We work with trusted independent appraisers in the Mesa and East Valley area who hold GIA Graduate Gemologist credentials and specialize in insurance-grade documentation. If you need a written appraisal for a piece you didn’t purchase from us, we’re happy to provide a referral to an appraiser we trust. Call (480) 459-9867 or walk in and we’ll point you in the right direction.

What Happens During a Jewelry Appraisal

Whether you’re coming in for a verbal evaluation or an insurance appraisal on a piece purchased from us, here’s what the process looks like.

No appointment needed. Bring the jewelry you want evaluated during business hours Tuesday through Saturday.

We inspect the piece under magnification, checking metal type, stone quality, setting condition, hallmarks, and overall craftsmanship. For diamonds, we evaluate cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. For colored gemstones, we assess type, quality, treatment history, and origin when identifiable.

We explain what the piece is worth and why. This includes current market conditions for the metal and stones, the quality of the craftsmanship, the brand or maker (if applicable), and whether the piece has any additional value as an antique, vintage, or designer item.

Based on the evaluation, we can discuss the next steps. If you want to sell, we make same-day cash offers on gold, diamonds, and estate jewelry.

If you want to repair, redesign, or restore the piece, we handle that in-house. If you need a written insurance appraisal on an outside piece, we provide a referral.

This is one advantage of getting an appraisal at a full-service jeweler rather than a standalone appraisal office. Whatever you decide to do with the piece after learning its value, we can help with the next step in the same visit.

What We Evaluate

Nelson Estate Jewelers provides verbal appraisals on a wide range of jewelry, precious metals, and valuables. Here’s what you can bring in:

Diamonds: Loose and mounted diamonds of all sizes. We evaluate cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. Diamonds over 1 carat with GIA or AGS certification may command premium pricing.

Gold Jewelry and Gold Items: Rings, chains, bracelets, earrings, watches, coins, bullion, and gold in any form. All karats from 10K through 24K in yellow, white, and rose gold.

Silver: Sterling silver jewelry, flatware, tea sets, coins, and decorative pieces.

Platinum and Palladium: Rings, settings, and other platinum or palladium pieces.

Colored Gemstones: Rubies, sapphires, emeralds, tanzanite, opals, and other precious and semi-precious stones. We assess type, quality, size, and treatment history.

Estate and Antique Jewelry: Vintage and antique pieces, including Art Deco, Victorian, Retro, and mid-century designs. Age and provenance can significantly affect value.

Watches: Luxury and vintage watches from brands like Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Tag Heuer, and others. We evaluate condition, movement type, and current resale market.

Other Valuables: Designer jewelry pieces, signed pieces, costume jewelry with collectible value, military items, coins, paper money, and pre-WW2 stamps.

If you’re not sure whether we can evaluate something, call (480) 459-9867 or bring it in. We’ll take a look.

When You Need an Appraisal (And What Type)

People come in for appraisals for different reasons, and the type of evaluation they need isn’t always the same. Here are the most common situations:

You inherited jewelry and don’t know what it’s worth. A verbal appraisal gives you a clear picture of what you have so you can decide whether to keep, sell, repair, or redesign the pieces.

You want to sell gold, diamonds, or estate jewelry. We provide a verbal evaluation and a same-day cash offer. No obligation. You find out the value and decide on the spot.

You bought a piece from Nelson and need insurance documentation. We provide written insurance appraisals on pieces purchased from our store, documenting replacement value for your insurance provider.

You’re going through an estate settlement. Verbal evaluations help executors and family members understand the value of a jewelry collection. For formal written documentation needed by attorneys or courts, we can refer you to a credentialed independent appraiser.

You want a second opinion. If another jeweler or buyer gave you a number and it doesn’t feel right, walk in for a free verbal appraisal. We’ll give you an honest assessment.

You’re curious about a piece. Maybe you found it at an estate sale, maybe it’s been in a drawer for years, maybe you just want to know what your grandmother’s ring is worth. No reason is too small. Walk in.

Jewelry Appraisal Questions Mesa Customers Ask

At Nelson Estate Jewelers, verbal appraisals are complimentary. Walk in with any piece and we’ll examine it and give you a professional evaluation at no charge. No appointment needed, no obligation. Insurance appraisals on pieces purchased from our store are also available. For written insurance appraisals on pieces purchased elsewhere, we refer customers to trusted independent appraisers in the Mesa and East Valley area. Those services typically charge a per-item fee that varies based on the complexity of the piece. Nelson Estate Jewelers, 1862 W. Baseline Road, Suite 101, Mesa, AZ 85202. (480) 459-9867.

An appraisal establishes the value of a piece for a specific purpose, such as insurance coverage, estate settlement, or personal knowledge. A buy quote is what a dealer will actually pay you in cash today. These are different numbers. Insurance replacement value reflects what it would cost to replace the piece at retail. A buy quote reflects the resale or melt value, which is always lower than retail replacement. At Nelson Estate Jewelers, we provide both: a verbal appraisal to help you understand your piece, and a cash offer if you decide to sell. Walk in any time during business hours.

A verbal appraisal from an experienced jeweler gives you a solid understanding of what your piece is worth and why. It covers the same evaluation points: metal type, stone quality, craftsmanship, condition, and current market context. The difference is documentation. A verbal appraisal is a professional conversation. A written appraisal is a formal document with detailed descriptions, measurements, photographs, and a stated replacement value. You need a written appraisal for insurance claims and certain legal situations. For personal knowledge, selling decisions, or getting a general sense of value, a verbal appraisal from a jeweler with 25+ years of experience is a reliable and practical option. Nelson Estate Jewelers offers complimentary verbal appraisals on any piece at our Mesa location.

A written insurance appraisal is a formal document that your insurance company relies on to establish coverage. It requires specific documentation standards and carries professional liability. Rather than offer a version of that service that doesn’t meet those standards, we refer customers to independent appraisers in the East Valley who specialize in insurance-grade documentation and hold advanced credentials for that specific work. We’re happy to provide that referral at no charge. Call (480) 459-9867 or walk in.

A verbal appraisal at Nelson Estate Jewelers typically takes 10 to 20 minutes per piece, depending on its complexity. Diamonds, colored gemstones, and multi-stone pieces require more examination time than a plain gold ring or chain. If you’re bringing in a larger collection, such as an inherited estate, plan for 30 minutes to an hour. No appointment is needed. Walk in Tuesday through Saturday at 1862 W. Baseline Road, Suite 101, Mesa, AZ 85202.

No. Walk in during business hours Tuesday through Saturday. We inspect your piece on the spot. If you’re bringing in a large collection (ten or more pieces), calling ahead to (480) 459-9867 is helpful so we can plan enough time for a thorough evaluation, but it’s not required.

Bring the piece itself. If you have any paperwork, such as a GIA certificate, a previous appraisal, a purchase receipt, or documentation of provenance, bring that along as well. These documents help with evaluation but are not required. We can assess a piece based on physical examination alone.

Yes. This is one of the advantages of getting an appraisal at a full-service jeweler. We evaluate your piece, explain what it’s worth and why, and if you decide to sell, we make a same-day cash offer right there. No second trip, no waiting. If you decide to keep the piece, there’s no pressure. Nelson Estate Jewelers, 1862 W. Baseline Road, Suite 101, Mesa. (480) 459-9867.

Nelson Estate Jewelers at 1862 W. Baseline Road, Suite 101, Mesa, AZ 85202 offers complimentary verbal appraisals on any piece with no appointment needed. We’re minutes from US-60 and Loop 101, serving Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, Apache Junction, Queen Creek, Gold Canyon, and Fountain Hills. Walk in Tuesday through Saturday or call (480) 459-9867. For written insurance appraisals, we can refer you to trusted independent appraisers in the East Valley.

Insurance appraisals should be updated every two to three years because metal and gemstone markets fluctuate. If gold prices have risen significantly since your last appraisal, your coverage may be insufficient to replace the piece. The holiday season and early spring tend to be busier periods for appraisals as people receive gifts and engagement rings. If you want a quieter visit with more one-on-one time, mid-week Tuesday through Thursday tends to be less busy at our Mesa location.

Yes. The value of gold, silver, platinum, and diamonds shifts with market conditions. Gold prices in particular have seen significant movement in recent years. An inherited ring valued at a certain amount five years ago may be worth considerably more or less today depending on metal weight and current spot prices. A complimentary verbal appraisal gives you an updated picture. Walk in any time with your piece.

Absolutely. This is one of the most common reasons people walk into Nelson Estate Jewelers. Bring the entire collection in and we’ll go through each piece with you, separating genuine precious metals and gemstones from costume jewelry, identifying anything with significant value, and explaining your options for each piece, whether that’s keeping, selling, repairing, or redesigning. There’s no charge for the evaluation and no obligation to sell anything. 1862 W. Baseline Road, Suite 101, Mesa. (480) 459-9867.

Yes. Walk in with your piece and we’ll give you an independent evaluation at no charge. We’ll explain what the piece is worth and why, including the metal value, stone quality, and any design or brand premiums. If the number we give you is higher than what you were offered elsewhere, you can sell to us on the spot. If it confirms the other offer, at least you know the valuation was fair. No pressure either way.

Insurance companies typically require a written appraisal document with a detailed description of the piece, including metal type and weight, stone specifications, measurements, condition notes, and a stated replacement value. If the piece was purchased from Nelson Estate Jewelers, we can provide that documentation. If the piece was purchased elsewhere, we’ll refer you to an independent appraiser in the East Valley who specializes in insurance-grade appraisals. Call (480) 459-9867 and we’ll point you to the right person.

An independent appraiser focuses exclusively on appraisal documentation. They typically hold formal appraisal credentials (GIA Graduate Gemologist, ASA, NAJA) and produce detailed written reports for insurance, estate, and legal purposes. A jeweler who offers appraisals, like Nelson Estate Jewelers, provides hands-on evaluation backed by decades of trade experience in buying, selling, and working with jewelry daily. The advantage of a jeweler is that you get a practical market perspective. We know what pieces actually sell for because we buy and sell every day. You also get access to additional services like repair, custom design, and same-day cash offers in the same visit. For formal written insurance documentation on outside pieces, an independent appraiser is the appropriate choice, and we’re happy to refer you.

Yes. Walking into any buyer without knowing what your piece is worth puts you at a disadvantage. A verbal appraisal from Nelson Estate Jewelers is free, takes 10 to 20 minutes, and gives you a clear understanding of what you have before you make any decisions. Even if you ultimately sell to someone else, you’ll negotiate from a position of knowledge.

Insurance appraisals should be updated every two to three years to keep pace with market fluctuations in metal and gemstone prices. If gold prices have moved significantly since your last written appraisal, your insurance coverage may not be enough to replace the piece at today’s cost. For personal knowledge, an appraisal at any point gives you a current snapshot. Walk in to Nelson Estate Jewelers any time for a complimentary verbal evaluation on any piece.

Any piece containing precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, palladium) or genuine gemstones (diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and other natural stones) is worth having evaluated. Estate and antique pieces, designer and signed jewelry, luxury watches, and pieces with unusual provenance often carry additional value beyond their material content. Even pieces you think might be costume jewelry are worth bringing in. We’ve seen pieces that owners assumed were worthless turn out to contain genuine stones or precious metals. Walk in with anything you’re curious about. The evaluation is free.

Yes. We can examine a diamond or gemstone in person and determine whether it’s a natural stone, a lab-created stone, or a simulant (like cubic zirconia or moissanite). This assessment is part of our standard evaluation and there’s no charge. Bring the piece to Nelson Estate Jewelers at 1862 W. Baseline Road, Suite 101, Mesa, AZ 85202 during business hours.
