Nelson Estate Jewelers offers professional laser engraving for rings, bracelets, pendants, watches, and other jewelry pieces at our Mesa showroom on Baseline Road.

Our dedicated engraving specialist operates a professional-grade laser system capable of fine script, block lettering, custom graphics, dates, coordinates, and symbols on gold, silver, platinum, stainless steel, and titanium.

Walk-ins are welcome Tuesday through Saturday, and most engraving work is completed the same day you bring it in.

Whether you purchased your piece from our store or somewhere else, we engrave it with the same level of care.

What We Can Engrave

Our laser system handles a wide range of metals and jewelry types.

Here is what you can bring in for engraving at our Mesa location:

Metals: Gold (10K, 14K, 18K), white gold, rose gold, sterling silver, platinum, palladium, stainless steel, titanium, and tungsten.

Jewelry Types: Wedding bands, engagement rings, promise rings, bracelets, bangles, cuff bracelets, pendants, lockets, necklace plates, watches (case backs and bezels), money clips, cufflinks, tie bars, and dog tags.

Engraving Styles: Script fonts, block lettering, cursive, custom handwriting replication, dates, names, initials, monograms, coordinates (latitude/longitude), short phrases, symbols, hearts, infinity marks, fingerprint reproductions, and small custom graphics.

Laser engraving produces clean, permanent marks without putting physical pressure on the piece, which means there is no risk of warping thin bands or loosening stone settings during the process.

What We Cannot Engrave (And Why)

Being upfront about limitations is part of doing honest work.

There are a few situations where laser engraving is not the right call, and we will tell you before any work starts:

Gold-plated or silver-plated jewelry. The laser cuts through the plating layer and exposes the base metal underneath.

The result looks uneven and damages the finish.

If you are unsure whether your piece is solid or plated, bring it in and we will test it at no charge.

Hollow pieces. Rings or bracelets with hollow construction can distort or collapse under engraving.

We inspect every piece before starting work and will let you know if yours falls into this category.

Extremely thin bands. If a ring band is too thin to hold an engraving without weakening the structure, we will recommend an alternative approach or let you know the engraving depth will need to be adjusted.

Costume jewelry and base metals with unknown alloys. Laser engraving works best on known metals.

If we cannot identify the metal composition, we will let you know before proceeding.

Our Engraving Process

Every engraving job at Nelson Estate Jewelers follows the same steps, whether it is a single wedding band or a set of groomsmen gifts.

Step 1 — Consultation. You bring the piece in or describe what you want over the phone. We discuss font style, placement, character count, and any design elements. If you have a specific handwriting sample, photo, or graphic you want replicated, bring it along.

Step 2 — Piece Inspection. Before any work begins, our engraving specialist inspects the piece for metal type, thickness, structural integrity, and any existing damage. If there are stones near the engraving area, we check that they are secure. This step protects your jewelry and avoids surprises.

Step 3 — Proof and Approval. You see exactly what the engraving will look like and where it will be placed before the laser touches your piece. Spelling, spacing, font size, and positioning are all confirmed with you. Nothing gets engraved until you approve it.

Step 4 — Laser Engraving. Our specialist runs the engraving using the laser system. The process is precise, non-contact, and takes minutes for most standard inscriptions.

Step 5 — Final Inspection and Cleaning. After engraving, we inspect the work under magnification, clean and polish the piece, and hand it back to you ready to wear.

Most standard engraving jobs are completed the same day. If you are planning engraving for a wedding, event, or gift with a specific deadline, call ahead at (480) 459-9867 so we can make sure your timing works.

Common Reasons People Get Jewelry Engraved

Engraving turns a piece of jewelry into something personal.

These are the most common requests we see at our Mesa shop:

  • Wedding ring inscriptions with names, dates, or short vows.
  • Engagement ring messages hidden on the inside of the band.
  • Anniversary date engravings marking milestone years.
  • Graduation gifts for high school and college.
  • Mother’s Day and Father’s Day pendants with children’s names or birthdates.
  • Memorial engravings honoring a loved one who has passed.
  • Religious verses or inspirational phrases on crosses and medallions.
  • Coordinate engravings marking the location of a proposal, wedding, or first meeting.
  • Pet memorial tags.
  • Custom monograms on cufflinks, tie bars, and money clips for groomsmen or corporate gifts.
  • Fingerprint replications transferred from ink or digital scan onto a ring or pendant.

If you have an engraving idea that is not on this list, bring it in or call us. If our laser can do it, we will make it happen.

Why Choose a Jeweler for Engraving
(Not a General Engraving Shop)

There are several general-purpose engraving shops in the East Valley that handle everything from trophies to industrial parts to pet tags.

They do good work on those items.

But jewelry is different.

A general engraving shop may not know the difference between how a laser interacts with 14K gold versus sterling silver, or why engraving near a prong-set diamond requires a different approach than engraving a flat stainless steel bracelet.

They may not have the tools to inspect your stones before and after the work.

At Nelson Estate Jewelers, our engraving specialist works alongside our repair jewelers and goldsmith every day.

The team understands metal composition, stone security, structural integrity, and finishing at a level that comes from working on fine jewelry full time.

If we notice a loose stone, a worn prong, or a thin spot in a band during the inspection step, we can flag it and fix it before the engraving begins, all under one roof.

That is the advantage of getting engraving done at a real jewelry shop instead of a place that also engraves trophies and water bottles.

FAQs about Jewelry Engraving at Nelson Estate Jewelers

Engraving pricing depends on the complexity of the work, the number of characters, the font style, and whether custom graphics or handwriting replication are involved. Simple text inscriptions on the inside of a ring cost less than a detailed fingerprint reproduction on a pendant. Call us at (480) 459-9867 or walk into our Mesa showroom for a quote before any work begins. We will give you the exact price upfront so there are no surprises.

Custom work such as handwriting replication, fingerprint transfer, or graphic reproduction typically requires more setup time than standard text, so it may be priced differently from a simple name-and-date inscription. Our engraving specialist will let you know the cost during the consultation, before any work begins. You always know the price before we begin.

Pricing structure depends on the type of work. Walk into our Mesa showroom at 1862 W. Baseline Road or call (480) 459-9867 and we will give you a clear quote based on exactly what you want done. No hidden fees or surprise charges.

Ask us about engraving when you purchase. Depending on the piece and the engraving request, we may be able to include it with your purchase or offer it at a reduced rate. Our goal is to send you home with a finished, personalized piece ready to wear or gift.

Most standard text engravings are completed the same day you bring the piece in. The actual laser engraving process takes just minutes, but we also spend time on consultation, proof approval, and post-engraving inspection and cleaning. If you are working with a tight deadline for a wedding or event, call ahead at (480) 459-9867 so we can plan your timing.

No appointment needed. Walk into our Mesa showroom at 1862 W. Baseline Road during business hours: Tuesday through Friday 10am to 6pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm. For large orders like bridal party sets or corporate gifts, calling ahead helps us make sure we have enough time set aside for your project.

Yes, always. We show you the exact text, font, spacing, and placement before the laser touches your piece. You approve everything first. Spelling, sizing, and positioning are all confirmed with you so there is no guesswork and no mistakes.

Absolutely. We engrave jewelry regardless of where it was purchased. Bring in your piece and we treat it with the same attention as anything from our own cases. Many of our Mesa engraving customers bring in pieces from online retailers, chain stores, and family members.

At least one to two weeks before the wedding date gives comfortable cushion, though we can often handle same-day work for simple inscriptions. Mesa wedding season runs heavy in the spring and fall when the weather cooperates, so those months tend to be busier across all our services. Calling ahead during peak season is a good idea. Reach us at (480) 459-9867.

Yes. Cufflinks, tie bars, money clips, bracelets, pendants, flasks, and other gift items are common group engraving requests. If you are ordering for a wedding party, let us know the total number of pieces and your event date so we can plan accordingly. We serve bridal parties from across the East Valley including Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, and Scottsdale.

Wedding band inscriptions are the most common, usually names, wedding dates, or short phrases. After that, anniversary date engravings, memorial messages, and Mother’s Day gifts with children’s names or birthdates round out the top requests.

Laser engraving is a non-contact process, meaning the laser marks the metal surface without applying physical force to the piece. There is no clamping, pressing, or vibration that would loosen stones. That said, our engraving specialist inspects your piece before starting and checks all stones and prongs. If we notice anything loose or at risk, we let you know and can address it before the engraving begins. That is the advantage of getting engraved at a full-service jewelry shop.

We confirm every detail with you in the proof step before the laser runs. You see the exact text, spacing, and placement and give written approval. Because of this proofing process, spelling errors are extremely rare. In the unlikely event something does go wrong on our end, we will make it right.

Laser engraving on solid precious metals like gold, platinum, and silver is permanent. The laser marks are cut into the surface of the metal, not printed on top of it. Normal daily wear will not erase a properly done laser engraving. However, if a ring is resized later on and the resize happens across the engraved area, the engraving may be affected. Let your jeweler know the piece is engraved before any future resizing work.

In many cases, yes. Depending on the depth of the original engraving and the thickness of the metal, our team can polish out old engravings and re-engrave new text. Bring the piece in and we will inspect it to let you know what is possible. There is no charge for the initial assessment.

Laser engraving uses a focused beam of light to mark the metal surface with high precision. It is fast, consistent, and works well for text, dates, fine script, and small graphics. Hand engraving is done with a sharp tool called a graver pushed into the metal by a skilled artisan. Hand engraving has a distinctive look with deeper cuts and a more traditional feel. Nelson Estate Jewelers uses laser engraving for its precision, speed, and ability to handle fine detail on a wide range of metals and jewelry types.

General engraving shops work on everything from plaques to water bottles to industrial parts. They do that work well. But jewelry requires a different level of care. Precious metals behave differently under a laser than brass trophy plates. Stones near the engraving area need inspection. Thin bands and delicate settings need evaluation before work begins. At Nelson Estate Jewelers, our engraving specialist works alongside repair jewelers and a goldsmith daily. If anything needs attention beyond the engraving itself, we handle it in the same visit under the same roof.

Laser engraving works well on solid gold (10K, 14K, 18K), white gold, rose gold, platinum, palladium, sterling silver, stainless steel, titanium, and tungsten. It is not recommended for gold-plated, silver-plated, or gold-filled pieces because the laser cuts through the thin surface layer and exposes the base metal underneath. If you are not sure what your piece is made of, bring it in and we will test it for free before any work is done.

Know the text you want engraved, including exact spelling, dates, and any symbols. If you want a specific font, bring a screenshot or example. For custom handwriting, bring a clear sample written in dark ink on white paper. For fingerprint engraving, we can work from an ink print or digital file. If you are not sure about font or style, our engraving specialist can show you options in the shop.

It depends on the ring size and the font size chosen. A size 7 ring has roughly 58mm of interior circumference, which comfortably fits a short phrase, two names and a date, or a set of coordinates. Smaller ring sizes fit fewer characters, and larger rings fit more. Our specialist will advise on the best character count for your specific ring during the consultation so everything stays legible and well-spaced.

Yes. Interior inscriptions are the most common for wedding bands and engagement rings because they are hidden and personal. Exterior engraving is less common but works well for design elements, patterns, or names on wider bands that have enough surface area. We can engrave one side or both depending on your preference and the ring dimensions.

Yes. We engrave watch case backs and in some cases bezels, depending on the watch construction and material. Bring the watch in and our engraving specialist will inspect it to confirm what is possible. This is a popular request for retirement gifts, graduation presents, and anniversary milestones in our Mesa shop.
